Purple Day

March is Epilepsy Awareness Month in Canada and every March 26th marks Purple Day, when landmarks and buildings across Calgary, Southern Alberta, and Canada will be lit purple to raise awareness for epilepsy. This year Canyon Meadows Community Association will join the festivities to help support those living with epilepsy and help reduce the stigma associated with epilepsy. Wear your favourite purple clothing and accessories and join us for this event half way through Spring Break for the following:

  • – Concession – purple cupcakes!
  • – Purple balloons
  • – Purple gemstone lighting
  • – Board games, glitter tattoos in the Rink Room
  • – Scavenger hunt, skip rope, sidewalk chalk, basketball, soccer outside
  • – Our Business Partner the Ukrainian Bakery (next to Tempo Gas) will be creating amazing purple themed treats!

Epilepsy Information

1 in 100 people in our province are living with an epilepsy diagnosis. That’s about 65, 000 individuals facing unique challenges, including 5,000 children.

When someone has a seizure, a discharge of excessive electrical activity in the brain affects how a person feels, thinks, and behaves. The symptoms range from mild to debilitating and can last anywhere from seconds to minutes. Epilepsy Calgary offers programs, support services and advocacy to anyone affected by epilepsy.

At the Epilepsy Association of Calgary, they provide vital support, education, and advocacy to empower those affected by epilepsy. www.epilepsycalgary.com

Purple Day History

Beginning in her home province of Nova Scotia, Megan set aside March 26, 2008 as a day to raise awareness for epilepsy. Named after the internationally recognized colour for epilepsy – lavender – Purple Day quickly became a global event with participants on every continent. See more at the Epilepsy Ontario website.

The event is finished.
